|Playing since the age of 8, Barry Turner aka BFUNK is a versatile award winning drummer that plays many style of music to include Jazz, R&B, Funk, Blues, and Latin. Barry has played with blues giant Eddie Kirkland, formerly of the John Lee Hooker band to local DC blues legends, Linwood Taylor, Robert Light House, James Mabry and Clarence the Bluesman Turner. As part of the 1998 DC Blues Competition winning band, The Blueshounds Barry’s solid funk pocket and innovative interpretations of classic blues standards help thrust the band to the international blues competition in Memphis Tenn. The Blueshounds finished in the top 10 of all the unsigned bands from around the world!
Barry currently co-manages his own band along with his funk partner Charles “Reds” Adkins. The bands unique name allows Barry and Reds to be a rhythm section for hire, or with its core band members depending on the gig. The bands name is MASFIK. It stands for Me And Some Folks I Know. This way the band can bring in a stable of talented Folks We Know to perform, or be called upon to play many types of gigs for other groups.
Barry’s influences include his father, who bought him his first drum set, as well as Art Blakey, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Dennis Chambers, Don Brewer, and Peter Rivera.
